Why Cameras Cell Phones Will Not Replace Digital Cameras In 2007
OK, I’m going to hold myself to a bold statement here and say that Camera Cell Phones will not replace Digital Cameras in 2007. In fact, make that – Will Not Replace Them EVER.
How do I know this? Well, I live in constant fear that whatever piece of technology I buy, will become obsolete a few months from whenever I buy it.
I believed this so strongly that I have not bought several items because I had convinced myself that that they will be useless and not supported in the near future.
My main reason for this is that I had been secretly convincing myself that the Mobile Phone was going to be the single electronic item that I, or anyone else, would need. And that all other electronic gadgets would be integrated with the mobile phone.
However, I recently caved in and acquired an iPod. I was initially holding out for a cell phone with a good MP3 player, but circumstances dictated otherwise.
All I can say now is that I can’t imagine using anything but an iPod for listening to MP3 on the move. I’ve been convinced by the marketing, advertising, design and most of all the branding of the iPod. Everything about the iPod is about listening to music on the move.
And that’s why a mobile phone with a digital camera will never be a Canon PowerShot SD600.
And likewise, a Nikon Digital Camera will never be a Nokia Mobile Phone. Nikon make cameras – Nokia make cell phones!
So here is my theory to back up my statement in the title. It’s all about Brand and Positioning.
Branding is like making a promise. Canon promise to make you the super-deluxe digital camera that will take photos better (or at least as good as) any other digital camera on the market.
Positioning is where Canon have placed themselves in the market. Think Canon, think Digital Camera (ok, and maybe printers too, but it’s all about producing quality imaging!)
Can you think of any company that will promise to make you mobile phone take pictures that are better than any produced by Canon or Nikon digital cameras?

I too think cell phones will never replace digital cameras. First the optics, cell phones won’t be able to have the same quality of optics that say Nikon or Canon have.
They won’t be able to easily incorporate an optical zoom either without increasing the side of the cell phone, so I don’t see that happening. Then the flash, a flash draws a lot of current (have you seen the large capacitor inside a digicam?) anyway that would kill the battery life of a cellphone if people started getting flash crazy.
Sure it is nice that the Sony-Erricson(sp) phone has a 2.0MP camera and 1GB (to 4GB) of room for MP3s but yea, I can’t see them ever coming close the a quality of a digital camera .
